Keys to the project

The increase in chronic illnesses in Morocco has led to a greater incidence and prevalence of kidney failure. In this context, the Ministry of Health set up the Integrated Network of Emergency Medical Attention to help patients, casualties and pregnant women in emergency situations. Public and private investment also rose to create new haemodialysis centres, increase the number of kidney transplants, and diversify the type of transplants carried out, with the introduction of cornea and bone marrow transplants.

Under these circumstances, the cooperation between the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Ministry of Health has been crucial for improving transplant capabilities, updating regulations, developing the national register, promoting kidney transplants and creating criteria for the reimbursement of costs for these medical procedures. The AFD has also worked with university hospitals in Rabat, Casablanca and Fez to improve the response to medical emergencies and develop a holistic strategy.

Avicena’s recommendations have helped the AFD and the Ministry of Health to improve the governance of the national transplant system, promote organ donation, review the hospital emergency services model and establish standards for quality, funding and accessibility to the kidney transplant system.
